To be challenged...

30 Day Yoga Challenge

Day One

I haven't blogged in a while, and really it doesn't matter because most people don't know this blog exists (I used to like it that way). So here I am again, on day one of my 30 day yoga challenge.

I am participating in this challenge for many reasons. There have been an abnormal amount of changes in my life as of late and to be honest some days I feel like I am barely hanging on. I don't know how much I'll share with you throughout the challenge but you are welcome to keep reading.
Yesterday was June 1st, Day One of the challenge and Day One of my 35 days till Saskatchewan. I have two weddings to attend this summer, the first union will be one of my best friends Christen Guckert to the love of her life Tyler Toderan, with their baby girl Taylin in tow. Christen and I met in highschool after being introduced by my oldest and dearest friend Shanda Rogochewsky, they are connected somehow but I can't remember enough detail to explain. Christen and I hit it off immediately, we both had to grow up very quickly and shared similar challenges, it was nice to have that rock. She and I were highschool grad/prom dates and I loved every minute of it. She shared my first trip out of Canada (Mexico) and was there for my first real heart break and the second, third, fourth.... haha. After I moved to Vancouver she was the first friend to come visit, we celebrated by getting tattoos, (mine is on my wrist and hers on her foot). I remember the day she called me to say she was pregnant. First a little back story -- I have always been the rebellious one (if you will) among my friends, and by rebellious I mean "the one who always did things differently". In Saskatchewan there is a certain charm to living, and the "norm" is far different from Vancouver's way of life (or should we say Nadine in Vancouver.....'s way of life). When we were young and dreamed about what we would do when we grew up, my response always involved career and travelling-- where most girls would talk about the hunky men they'd marry and the beautiful babies they'd have. After a horribly heartbreaking break up on my 19th birthday I became the Bitter Betty of the group and my views on early marriage and babies became clouded and I wanted no part of it. I also wasn't afraid to speak my mind, unfortunately I may have hurt some of my friends in the process. Looking back, it is completely understandable that Christen waited 10 weeks to tell me she'd be having beautiful baby Taylin. My reaction.... well it was predictable. I was just outside my favorite Sushi restaurant in Crosstown when I got the call, first a little small talk and then "I have some news". She told me that her and Tyler were going to have a baby and all of a sudden I wasn't so chatty anymore, I paused and quickly regarded my words before I spoke. "I'm just about to step into a business meeting, can I call you back?" OK.... probably not the best response to your best friend's wonderful news. But that was me.... unfortunately. I called her back sometime later asked her if she was happy, when I was assured she was I put my views aside and let her know I was happy for her and wanted to be supportive. I love that baby girl and try to spoil her any chance I get. When I learned that Christen and Tyler were engaged to be married I was overjoyed, it's a great feeling seeing the ones you love so incredibly happy. I will see you two crazy kids July 7th.
The second wedding is another one of my oldest friends Deirdre Bastien to Lee Saretsky. I met Deirdre in grade 6 when I transferred from St. Margaret's to Ecole Ross. She was the first to befriend me and we shared many similar interests, and we were nearly inseparable in highschool. She lived just up the road and I would go to her house almost every day for lunch, we'd walk up Grafton street gossiping the whole way and whip up crazy things for lunch. Once we even convinced our mothers we had chicken pox and stayed home from school together an entire week. To this day, I'm still not sure how we pulled that off. Deirdre was there for my first love, first heartbreak, first hangover... hehe. I hope that we are still great friends for many firsts to come. Can't wait to watch you walk down that isle beautiful.

The first yoga class of the challenge was great, it is a great way to have an entire hour and a half truly to yourself. No connection to the outside world. just complete serenity. I'm a little wobbly in the poses as I haven't been practicing yoga for a while. That will come with time, my goal is to be back in my little yoga shorts and mastering the hand stand (or at least attempting it) by the fourth week.

Thanks for reading.
